Besides looking at the Coronavirus stats on-line every day (December 1: Cameron County, 1,151 deaths; Texas, 21,968 deaths, United States, 271,296), I have a new number that I'm following: How many days, hours and seconds until Joe Biden's inauguration? When I started this article, there were 50 days, one hour and 25 seconds until Donald Trump is kicked out of office. 

I would never want to contemplate the fat lady unless she were fully clothed, but it will be wonderful to witness Trump stripped of his power and reduced to an empty talking head who makes a periodic appearance on television as the dancing bear liberated from his cage. 

Everybody says it's a done deal--Biden is in and Trump is out. Like the apostle Thomas, I won't believe it until I see it myself. Before becoming president, Trump filed suit after suit to escape his business failures. He has lied and cheated his whole life. He is implementing the same strategy from his private life to his political life to steal the election and remain in The White House as a dictator or a king. He doesn't care about the title bestowed on him as long as he keeps the power. 

Rather than Trump having a modicum of success of his quixotic crusade, I fear that Biden will drop dead before he is inaugurated. What would happen then? He is 78 years old. He looks fit, but he could croak at any time. The other day his dog almost killed him and he is limping around with a broken foot. I have said that dogs, and cats for that matter, are the bane of humanity. If you don't believe me, who is the biggest dog of them all? Trump!

With the exception of Fox, the other networks have limited his air time; they aren't giving him any publicity as he promotes lies and conspiracies in order to pilfer the presidency after he lost the electoral college, 306-232, and trails Biden by seven million votes as the ballots are still being counted. I scan Trump's latest frivolous law cases and listen to him blustering, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Biden has seven weeks of life coursing through his veins.

Once he is in office, he can drop dead. Kamala Harris can take over and name Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez or Bernie Sanders as her vice president. Many critics argue that this ticket would never win another term, but a duo of Harris/Ocasio Cortez would so discombobulate the rabid Republicans, the racists, the rednecks, the reactionaries and the Religious Right bigots that they would drop dead of heart attacks and these two gals would win in a landslide.

There is a less fantastic scenario that I envision. Like Pope Benedict XVI resigning and Pope Francis succeeding him, I can envision Biden, after the 2022 mid-terms, stepping down after he has initiated and implemented his plans and programs and allowing Harris to replace him. He will be 80 and I don't think he will have the energy for another campaign or the health to serve an entire second term. 

It would be a revolutionary move and he would be memorialized for elevating a black woman to the presidency. She would face a difficult challenge in 2024, but if she proved her mettle, she could galvanize liberal white men, women, minorities and youth in the same dynamic fashion as Barack Obama and drub any adversary, even an aging and angry Trump.

Never play defense. Press the action. Stay on the offense. Trump represents a diminishing breed of Americans. The Aryan race is dying and diversity is the future. Trump believes he is Davy Crockett at the Alamo fighting legions of foreigners and we know the fate these defenders of the white-is-right philosophy met. 

We will never find common ground with the renegades who comprise the ultra-conservative Republican wing. They are clinging to the illusion of Eisenhower's 1950s when the gringo was king, the gringa was his queen and you could lynch niggers. It's time to put these sullen and humorless humans out of their misery by sentencing them to political exile in our democratic process.

We Democrats, like white cops putting their knees on the necks of their black victims and squeezing the life out of them, must apply the same technique figuratively to the Republicans' necks and enlighten them that they are going to have evolve to the changing times or they will soon find themselves extinct.

My patio faces east. In the early afternoon the sun has embarked on its ancient descent toward the west and I relax on my lawn chair in the shade. I breathe deeply. My lungs are clear. Coronavirus has me contemplating life from a variety of angles. I am led to believe that those who suffer death from the disease suffocate. That doesn't sound like a pleasant exit to me. As a result of this grim reality, I have quit smoking dope. I don't want to weaken my lungs any more than 55 years of puffing on joints has wreaked on them. I have been retired for three years from the BISD after the superintendent threatened to fire me if I kept writing. I chose to keep writing. It is my spiritual calling.
