Columbus Day. Apparently Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. Apparently America was discovered more than 10,000 years ago by Asians nomads crossing the frozen Bering Straits. This is no secret. It's mentioned in all the history books, but nobody seems to have built any monuments to them.

As Union General Phil Sheridan infamously said, "The only good Indian is a dead Indian." The real discovery that Columbus made was his wife was availing herself to a variety of men during his four trips to the New World who scalped her so regularly there wasn't a pubic left on her mound when he returned from his final voyage.

There are many unpleasant discoveries that we are making these days. With Trump recklessly out-of-control, we are discovering that we aren't the greatest county in the history of mankind. Not that all of us ever fell for that line.

For argument's sake, if there were a contest for greatest country in the history of mankind, we would have to nominate China for that meaningless honor. Its thousands of years of recorded history and it's 1.5 billion inhabitants dwarf us in both categories. Hell, after the Jews, there is no mentioning of us as next in line on the list of the Chosen People to the chagrin of the Southern preachers and Trump disciples who insisted that the Bible countenanced human bondage.

Would the world be a better place if the Europeans had stayed at home? Millions of lives would have been saved, but, as the saying goes, the death of one Spaniard is a tragedy while the demise of a million natives is strictly a statistic.

The Columbus statues are falling. That's life: You're a hero today, a villain tomorrow. It's all in the pen of a propagandist disguised as a historian who has been picked to record the conqueror's tale. The Confederate statues are taking a hammering.

Brownsville, which is as much as a century behind the times, dumped its Jefferson Davis memorial on the trash heap of history. Nobody protested, but one of the Rio Grande Valley's finest qualities is that nobody cares. A cop kills an African-American and the whole town erupts in a riot. A cop kills a Mexican-American and everyone in Brownsville agrees that the victim deserved his fate.

There will be no statues honoring Trump unless they are erected in Moscow. This will no doubt come as a disappointment to Trump who compares himself to Abraham Lincoln. Many believe that Lincoln used saving the union as a pretext for liberating the slaves to substantiate igniting the Civil War.

If the Confederacy were a nation, we might be fighting them over territorial issues similar to Russia assimilating a part of Ukraine in a conflict that still rages. The Confederacy would have had every right to expand into the Caribbean, south to the Strait of Magellan and west to Hawaii citing either Manifest Destiny or the Monroe Doctrine or both. For all we know Baja California might be a slave state except Mexicans would be doing the heavy lifting. If you ain't white, then you might as well be black.

In humanity's history, Lincoln's sagacity in refusing to divide the Union because he envisioned the repercussions ranks as one of the most noblest crusades undertaken by any visionary. Trump, who wants to protect the Confederate statues and divide us once again, has the temerity to call himself a second Lincoln.

Comparing him to Benedict Arnold might be more appropriate.
