The police chief took a seat across from Annie Gunn. Denny's was empty. Coronavirus was taking a toll on the chains. Unlike the local businesses, however, they had the national resources to survive.
"What's new, Chief?" asked the journalist."Same shit. Some days are quiet, some aren't. And you?"
"Lying low and hoping to survive. Besides the COVID deaths, I read in the newspaper that the department is investigating a pair of murders. What were the circumstances about the decapitated woman? Have you found her head?"
"She was young," replied the chief. "And we haven't found her head."
"How did you identify her?"
"Her family reported her missing and a brother identified her by her tattoos. We've interviewed family and friends, but we have no leads."
"Do we have a serial killer on the loose?"
"Are you referring to the decapitated woman we found a few months ago??
"Yeah. She has remained unidentified, right?"
"Right, but she had multiple stabs wounds and she had been raped. We don't have all the results from the lab, but this latest victim showed no signs of sexual molestation and there wasn't a bruise of her body. Serials killers follow the same pattern. We never dismiss any possibilities, but I don't think there is a connection."
"About the time you found the first decapitated body, there was another male discovered shot to death in the trunk of a car downtown. Is there a drug war taking place?"
"You've lived on the border long enough to know the answer to that question," answered the chief. "The drug wars never end. The cartels take matters into their own hands when accounts have to be squared. They save us time by resolving their own problems. How's business at the blog?"
"We have infinite space to fill. Do you mind if I use your info and attribute a few quotes to you about these crimes?"
"Sure. Just make me look good."
"Then the coffee is on you."
"No problem."
