Estanislao Contreras, the poet of Chicano Fuck Songs and Chicano Love Songs, has embarked on his new work entitled Despair & Desperation.
"It is going to be a collection of odes," said Contreras as he sat at El Hueso de Fraile listening to the Doc Sully Blues Band unplugged. "I have been inspired by Pablo Neruda's odes and his ability to take everyday subjects and fashion poems."My presentation will be different. He composed 30 to 40 lines per poem, but there are generally no more than three or four words in each line. I will have several long paragraphs composed in prose."
Though few poets derive financial success, Chicano Fuck Songs was a sensational debut artistically. His Chicano Love Songs didn't receive the same enthusiastic reception.
"I allowed my critics to convince me that Chicano Fuck Songs was too edgy when it was my strength," continued Contreras. "They convinced me to be more conventional and I lost my mojo with Chicano Love Songs.
"I'm not making that same mistake again. I'm not only putting a knife to the bone, but I'm breaking the bone and scooping out all the marrow. These are the kinds of pieces that will get me booted from clubs and keep me off Facebook."
"Contreras is at his best when he refuses to resist temptation," said his good friend Jack O'Connell. "When he holds back, he crashes; when he lets go, he soars.
"He has reached the moment of truth in his life. He is confronting the ugly and it ain't pretty. This is the kind of poetry that forces you to look at your haggard face in the mirror with pistols in both hands, but only one has a bullet. He is going to disappear into the darkness. Whether he returns or not, that remains to be seen."
