JOE JOHNSON: "For whatever it’s worth, I totally disagree with you about closing the Island during the Fourth of July weekend. Nobody forced anyone to come to SPI. Don’t people have enough responsibility on their own to know when to socialize and when not to? I do and I live here. I think it’s ridiculous to blame someone else for your own faults. C’mon Tommy, wake up. Stop blaming other people for others' faults. Take some responsibility. I welcome anyone who wants to come and enjoy the beach if you take responsibility for your own actions. If you think you should stay home and lay low, then do it. But don’t go to the party and then blame the host. That’s ridiculous.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: There's shouldn't be a party, Joe. I'm sure Trump, without a mask, ignoring social distancing and inviting large crowds, would have been right at home. It's irresponsible to throw a party, but then we have a president who is intent on destroying his own party. We are at war! I can imagine the Nazis bombing London and some crazy drunk insisting that he had the right to turn on the lights and invite his buddies over for a party. The Brits wouldn't put up with that shit. I love a good party and I love the Island, but I fear for my life, the lives on family members, the lives of friends and the fate of humanity in general. Now Trump wants to force children to physically attend school? When does the stupidity end? There hasn't been a significant outbreak among children. They have been sheltered and separated from others since the beginning of the pandemic. I taught school for 39 years. The flu would spread like wildfire among the students. There is no scientific evidence that children have a natural immunity to COVID. Until now, COVID has gone from the elderly to the middle aged to the younger generations. If we open schools and the plague rages, there will be a rebound effect from the youngest to the oldest. Trump has mismanaged this crisis and is so reckless in order to win reelection at any costs that he doesn't think twice about exploiting our most precious loved ones as guinea pigs. Let's make Trump and his racist followers the canaries in the mine. When are you going to realize that Trump is evil and should be FIRED? He is absolutely incompetent. Es un pendejo! Almost 135,000 have died with more than 3 million cases and spikes everywhere. Do these numbers mean anything to you, Joe, or is it all a hoax, fake news, a conspiracy concocted by the Democrats and Chinese to topple Trump? I threw caution to the wind a month ago after the reopening and jumped in the car with the significant other and my youngest son. I needed to get out. I went to Louie's and the place was packed. If 10% of the patrons were wearing masks, that would be an exaggeration. (For the record I was wearing a mask except when I was feasting on the buffet and drinking heavily.) Now we know the reason Texas is a hotspot and registered its highest total of deaths and cases today. Don't keep the lights on for me, Joe. It will be a while before I party at the Island surrounded by idiots who proclaim, "I'd rather die than wear a mask." We have to give Trump credit for outing the millions of idiots who call themselves Americans.)

My patio faces east. In the early afternoon the sun has embarked on its ancient descent toward the west and I relax on my lawn chair in the shade. I breathe deeply. My lungs are clear. Coronavirus has me contemplating life from a variety of angles. I am led to believe that those who suffer death from the disease suffocate. That doesn't sound like a pleasant exit to me. As a result of this grim reality, I have quit smoking dope. I don't want to weaken my lungs any more than 55 years of puffing on joints has wreaked on them. I have been retired for three years from the BISD after the superintendent threatened to fire me if I kept writing. I chose to keep writing. It is my spiritual calling. I had contributed 39 years to the school district and I was working for free. Retirement was a logical option. I don't miss the job, but I do miss my students, athletes and colleagues.
